Fees & Direct Billing

Clear answers about cost and coverage.

Money questions can add weight to an already heavy moment. Here is everything you need to know about session fees, insurance coverage, and direct billing through GreenShield and Telus eClaims, laid out plainly so you can focus on what actually matters.

The honest overview

What is and isn't covered.

Psychotherapy coverage in Ontario has two different stories, one public, one private. Here is the short version of both.

Not covered

OHIP does not cover private psychotherapy.

In Ontario, private psychotherapy sessions with a Registered Nurse Psychotherapist sit outside of OHIP. That means sessions are billed to you directly, not to the provincial health plan.

Often covered

Many extended health plans cover psychotherapy.

However, not all insurers recognize Registered Nurses as psychotherapists. Before booking, it is worth a quick call to your insurer to confirm that sessions with an RN Psychotherapist are covered under your plan, and to ask what your annual limit looks like.

Direct billing

Two ways your claim can be submitted for you.

Where eligible, Balens Psychotherapy bills your insurer directly through one of two trusted networks. You pay only your portion, if any, at the time of your session.

If your plan runs through GreenShield, claims can be submitted on your behalf after each session, subject to your plan eligibility and coverage terms. You will need to have your GreenShield details on file through JaneApp before your first session.

Eligible claims can be billed directly through Telus eClaims under counselling services. Insurance information is entered securely through JaneApp, and once set up, there is nothing for you to submit after each session.

Cost clarity is part of the care. You should never have to guess what therapy will ask of your wallet.

Session fees

Plainly priced, no surprises.

All fees are in Canadian dollars. Receipts are always issued after payment so you can submit for reimbursement or claim sessions as a medical expense on your taxes.

How it works

Three steps, start to finish.

01

Book your free 20-minute consult.

A no-pressure video or phone call to talk through what you are looking for, answer your questions, and see whether we feel like the right fit.

02

Share your insurance details in JaneApp.

Before your first paid session, you will securely enter your insurance information into JaneApp. This is what allows eligible claims to flow through to your insurer automatically.

03

Show up. That is it.

For each session, your claim is submitted for you. You pay only your portion if necessary, and a receipt is issued automatically for your records and tax time.

Common questions

A few things worth knowing.

The quickest way is to call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask two questions: Does my plan cover psychotherapy or counselling services provided by a Registered Nurse? And, what is my annual limit for mental health services? Some plans cover RN Psychotherapists without issue, others only recognise Registered Psychotherapists or Psychologists. The answer shapes what to expect at billing time.
No problem. You will still receive a detailed receipt after every session, which you can submit to your insurer yourself for reimbursement. Most insurance portals make this a quick, straightforward process, often just uploading your receipt.
Yes. Psychotherapy provided by a Registered Nurse is an eligible medical expense under the Canada Revenue Agency's rules. Keep the receipts issued after each session, and your accountant or tax software will guide you through claiming them. This applies whether you paid in full or received partial insurance reimbursement, for the portion you paid out of pocket.
Sessions cancelled or rescheduled with at least 48 hours' notice are not charged. Late cancellations and missed sessions are billed at the full session fee, as insurance does not cover no-shows. Life happens, and if something genuinely unavoidable comes up, reach out and we will work it out.
All major credit cards are accepted through JaneApp, a trusted Canadian practice management platform. Your payment information is securely stored and charged automatically after each session, so there is nothing to remember or hand over at the end of our time together.
